Buyer's guide · Lead gen tools

Lead generation tools: pick the category before the brand.

Most “best lead gen tools” lists mix products that do completely different jobs. This guide sorts them by what they actually do, what they cost to run and where each one breaks, so you can build a stack that fits your team.

Quick answer

Lead generation tools are software that find potential customers and the data to contact them. They fall into seven categories: contact databases, local business list builders, email finders and verifiers, LinkedIn tools, enrichment tools, outreach and sequencing platforms, and AI research agents. Choose the category that matches your buyers first, then compare vendors on data freshness, coverage and cost per usable lead.

Overview

Seven categories of lead gen tools, and what each one is for

A “lead generation tool” can mean a huge contact database, a Google Maps scraper or an email sequencer. They are not interchangeable. Here is the map before the detail:

CategoryAnswers the questionExamples

Local business list buildersWhich businesses of this type exist in this city?Apify actors, Outscraper, Reachant
Email finders and verifiersWhat is this person's email, and will it bounce?Hunter
LinkedIn toolsWho is the right person, and what are they posting?LinkedIn Sales Navigator
Enrichment toolsWhat else can I learn about the companies I already have?Waterfall enrichment platforms, API providers
Outreach and sequencingHow do I send and track a multi-step cadence?Sales engagement and cold email platforms
AI research agentsCan software research and qualify each lead for me?AI lead generators, LLM-based research inside other tools

Prices below were checked on each vendor's own pricing page as of October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a price, we describe the model only.

Category 1

Contact databases

What they do. Pre-built databases of companies and employees you filter by industry, headcount, location and job title, then unlock emails and phone numbers.

Best for. Selling to defined roles at mid-size and larger companies: “VP of Finance at SaaS companies with 50 to 500 employees”.

Pricing model. Per-seat subscriptions plus credits for revealing contact data. Apollo's pricing page lists a Free plan and paid tiers, with credits pooled across the team that reset each billing cycle and do not roll over. ZoomInfo sells through its sales team, so expect a quote rather than a list price.

Watch out for. Data ages between refreshes, and coverage of very small businesses (a two-chair barbershop, a family-run plumbing company) is thin because those owners rarely have a LinkedIn footprint. Check bounce rates on a sample before buying a large credit pack.

Category 2

Local business and Maps-based list builders

What they do. Search Google business listings by category and location and return each business with name, address, phone, website, rating and review count. Some add emails and social links scraped from the company website.

Best for. Anyone selling to local and small businesses: agencies, SaaS for restaurants or clinics, B2B suppliers, insurance and financial services. See our guide to local business leads for the full workflow.

Pricing model. Usually usage-based. Apify has a Free plan with $5 of usage per month and paid plans from $19/month (monthly billing); each actor in its store is billed per event or per platform usage, so check the actor's own page. Outscraper is also usage-based, priced per record. Reachant charges leads plus credits for enrichment and shows the estimate before each search.

Watch out for. How the data is collected (official API or scraping the Maps website), whether results need cleanup, and whether enrichment costs extra per step. We compare these trade-offs in Apify Google Maps scraper alternatives.

Category 3

Email finders and verifiers

What they do. Find the likely email address of a person from their name and company domain, and check whether an address will accept mail before you send.

Best for. Teams whose main channel is cold email, and anyone cleaning a list before a send.

Pricing model. Credits. Hunter offers a free plan with 50 credits a month; one found email costs 1 credit and one verification 0.5. Paid plans start at $49/month billed monthly (Starter, 2,000 credits). Credits reset monthly.

Watch out for. “Catch-all” domains that accept everything and cannot be fully verified. Our guide on how to find business emails covers the manual methods too.

Category 4

LinkedIn tools

What they do. Search LinkedIn's member data with advanced filters, save leads and accounts, and message people outside your network.

Best for. Finding the right person inside a target account and warming up contact before a call or email.

Pricing model. Per-seat subscription. LinkedIn Sales Navigator Core starts at US$119.99 per month billed monthly, Advanced at US$159.99, and Advanced Plus is quoted. A free trial is available to eligible members.

Watch out for. No exportable emails or phone numbers by default, and limited coverage of owners of small local businesses.

Category 5

Lead enrichment tools

What they do. Take records you already have (company names, domains, emails) and append fields such as industry, headcount, social profiles, technologies used or decision-maker. “Waterfall” enrichment queries several providers in sequence until one returns a value.

Best for. Teams with an existing CRM or event list that is missing fields, and RevOps teams standardizing data.

Pricing model. Almost always credits per record or per field, often on top of a platform subscription.

Watch out for. Paying for an attempt that returns nothing. Ask whether failed lookups consume credits, and measure the fill rate on a sample of your own data.

Category 6

Outreach and sequencing platforms

What they do. Send multi-step email sequences, schedule call and LinkedIn tasks, track opens and replies, and stop the sequence when someone answers.

Best for. Any team running more than a handful of cadences at once. Without one, follow-ups slip.

Pricing model. Per seat or per sending inbox, usually monthly.

Watch out for. Deliverability setup (domain authentication, warm-up, daily limits) and compliance. Every commercial email must follow CAN-SPAM, including a physical postal address and a working opt-out, and the FTC holds both the sender and the company being promoted responsible.

Category 7

AI lead generators and research agents

What they do. Use language models to research each company on the web, fill gaps, classify fit against your ICP, and draft a personalized first line. Some work as standalone apps; others are features inside databases and enrichment tools. A newer pattern is connecting a lead tool to an AI assistant through MCP, so you can ask for “dentists in Austin with fewer than 50 reviews” in plain language.

Best for. Personalizing outreach at a volume where manual research is impossible, and qualifying lists against fuzzy criteria (“family-owned”, “recently renovated”).

Pricing model. Credits or usage, because each lead costs model and search calls.

Watch out for. Confident errors. An AI lead generator that does not show where a fact came from can invent a decision-maker or a recent event. Spot-check a sample of every batch before it goes into a sequence.

Evaluate

Checklist for evaluating any lead gen tool

  • Data source and freshness. Where does each record come from, and when was it last updated? A live search is fresher than a database snapshot.
  • Coverage for your market. Test with your real ICP in your real cities. Coverage of enterprise contacts says nothing about coverage of landscapers in Ohio.
  • Fields you actually need. List them first: decision-maker, phone, website, email, social profiles, rating. Ignore the rest.
  • Cost per usable lead. Divide the total cost by the records that have the fields you need, not by records returned.
  • Compliance. How the data was collected, whether the vendor helps you honor opt-outs, and whether the tool encourages practices that break CAN-SPAM or the FCC's TCPA rules (for example, automated texts to cell phones without consent).
  • Export and CRM. CSV at minimum; native CRM sync if your team lives in one.
  • Free tier or trial. Enough to run one real search on your market before you pay.

Honest fit

Where Reachant fits

Reachant is a category 2 tool with built-in enrichment. You pick the US or Brazil, one or more business categories and a city or region; it finds the companies through the official Google Places API and adds website, public email, phone, social links, decision-maker, Google rating and review count. You see the cost estimate before the search runs, and results export to CSV. You can also run searches from Claude, Claude Code or Cursor through the Reachant MCP server.

What it does not do: send emails or sequences, verify emails, validate phones, sync natively with a CRM, or filter by employee count. Pair it with a verifier and an outreach tool. The free plan includes 50 leads and 100 credits, no card required; see pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lead generation tool?

Software that helps you find potential customers and the information needed to contact them: company lists, decision-maker names, emails, phone numbers and social profiles. Some tools also send the outreach. Most teams combine two or three tools rather than relying on one.

What is the best lead generation tool for B2B?

It depends on who you sell to. For mid-size and enterprise buyers by job title, contact databases and LinkedIn Sales Navigator are the usual starting point. For small and local businesses, a list builder based on Google business data covers far more of the market. Match the tool's data source to your ICP first.

Are there free lead generation tools?

Yes, several vendors offer a free tier, for example Hunter (50 credits a month), Apify ($5 of monthly usage) and Reachant (50 leads and 100 credits), as of October 2026. Free tiers are good for testing data quality on your own market before you pay.

What is an AI lead generator?

A tool that uses language models to research companies, fill in missing fields, score fit or draft personalized first lines. The useful ones show their sources. Treat any AI-written fact about a prospect as something to check before you send it.

What are lead enrichment tools?

Tools that take a list you already have (company names, domains or emails) and add fields: website, industry, headcount, social profiles, decision-maker, phone. Enrichment is often sold per credit, so cost per usable record matters more than the plan price.
